Fabio Mechetti, conductor

Born in São Paulo, Fabio Mechetti is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic since its creation in 2008. Recently, he became the first Brazilian invited to lead an Asian orchestra, being appointed Principal Conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic. In the United States, Mechetti was Resident Conductor of the San Diego Symphony, Principal Conductor of the Syracuse Symphony, and is now Conductor Emeritus of the Spokane Symphony and the Jacksonville Symphony, after leading them for many seasons with great success. In Washington, he served as Associate Conductor for Mstislav Rostropovich in the National Symphony. With a solid career both in the USA and Brazil, Mechetti has already performed in Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, New Zealand, Spain, Japan, Scotland, Finland, Canada, Sweden, and Italy. He is also a winner of the Malko Competition and holds Master’s degrees in conducting and composition from the Juilliard School of Music.

Savio Sperandio remarkable voice and stage presence make him one of the most required singers in Brazil. He has performed opera roles on major stages in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belém, Manaus and Belo Horizonte. Abroad, he sang as Bartolo in Il Barbieri di Siviglia at Teatro Cólon (Argentina), Ercolano Opera Festival (Italy) and Teatro Real (Spain). Sperandio also perfomed at Rossini Opera Festival, Teatro Arriaga and Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, among others important stages. He has collaborated with Emilio Sagi, Alberto Zedda e Roberto Abbado. Some of his most recent performances are in The Rake’s Progress, Nabucco, Roméo et Juliette and Aida.

Concentus Musicum of Belo Horizonte is a mixed ensemble devoted to the interpretation of baroque, classical and renaissance music, as well as of a selected repertoire of contemporary composers. Created by conductor Iara Fricke Matte, it had its debut on December 2016, presenting Mozart’s Requiem with the Minas Gerais Philharmonic, starting then a series of collaborations with the Orchestra. Future projects include programming of several vocal/orchestral works by J. S. Bach, his contemporary Jan Dismas Zelenka and Brazilian colonial composers, besides several instrumental works from the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century.

Iara Fricke Matte is a choral and orchestral conductor devoted to the study and performance of compositions from the Baroque and Renaissance periods as well as of a selected number of contemporary pieces. Her repertoire is comprised of choral and a cappella works, symphonic, and symphonic-choral works, with a particular interest and affinity for the repertoire of J. S. Bach. Fricke Matte holds a PhD and a master’s degree in Choral Conducting from Indiana University and the University of Minnesota. As a student at Indiana University, she also specialized in Early Music performance and Music History. She teaches orchestral and choral conducting at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. As Music and Artistic Director of the choir Ars Nova, from the same university, she obtained the award Troféu JK de Cultura e Desenvolvimento [JK Prize of Culture and Development], as well as third place in the mixed-choir, classical music category of the 34th International Music Festival of Cantonigròs (Spain). In 2016, she created the ensemble Concentus Musicum of Belo Horizonte.

Artistic Director at Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, André Heller-Lopes has great experience in staging both opera and orchestral music. He has won the Carlos Gomes Award for Best Stage Director in an Opera for three consecutive times, and was nominated at the 2014 Opera Awards for his work in a Brazilian production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Professor at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Music School, André took courses at the Royal Opera House in London, the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco and in the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He directed operas and concertos all over Latin America, as well as Portugal, United States, Austria, England and Malaysia. In Brazil, Heller-Lopes is also recognized for his projects in support of new talents and involvement in democratization of lyric music.
